Having moved into my house in 2021, I knew that there were going to be updates to the property that I wanted to make. This year I decided to tackle the backyard.
I had hired a landscaper to mulch and weed the front yard, and after seeing the great job that was done, I asked the landscaper to come back and help me figure out what to do with the backyard. I mentioned that this would be a multi-year project, as I hadn’t yet identified what was possible. A few chats later, we had a plan:
1. Backyard cleanup – get rid of all the leaves leftover from the fall cleanup
2. Cut down all the saplings, a few trees, and the dying bushes
3. Pull all the stumps
So, June 20 I took before pictures. I wanted to make sure I could see the change as it happened.
The landscaper came on June 21 and began the cleanup. It was amazing watching the backyard start to look like one again. He started blowing the leaves away and cutting down saplings. All things I had thought I would be able to do myself and realized I just couldn’t take on the full job.
I watched through out the day as he started to shape the backyard. A full day, so much completed. He came back on day 2 to finish the first phase. It was such a huge change once he finished. He even cut down trees in the front yard and removed saplings there as requested. June 22 came around and he finished up the work. I took pictures and learned how to take a panorama picture to show the full backyard and the work that had been done.

The next phase was to pull up the stumps from the trees and saplings. I never realized just how spread out the roots got. When he pulled up one of the tree stumps, I was amazed to see it. But I knew that pulling the stumps would help to prevent the ground sinking in as the stumps rotted.

Now, I’ll need to think about what gets done in 2023. We’ve talked about seeing if grass can be grown with the limited amount of sun I get, so there will be some trial and error. More saplings and smaller trees will be cut down to see if that gives additional light filtered through the big trees leaves.
