Color Photography Class at Mt. Auburn Cemetery (Cambridge, MA)

At the last moment, I signed up for a color photography class with a meetup group that took us through the Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. It was a beautiful fall day, and the teacher was marvelous.

Our first assignment was to capture color in a spot and just to focus on the color we saw. We were to try to capture no more than 3 colors in the image. We were standing under a gorgeous yellow, gold, and orange leaved tree, and I couldn’t help but try to capture it.

The next assignment was to try to capture colors based on the color wheel. We were asked to capture one image of colors that were opposites on the wheel – blue and red, purple and yellow, etc. Contrast colors… The idea was to get something that popped! In addition, we were asked to capture images of things that were neighbors on the wheel – various shades of green, yellow, red, etc. Harmony Hues…

During this assignment, the teacher showed us a picture of varying shades of green and asked us to look for something that had varying shades of a color.

The third assignment was to capture images that were warm and cool.

Warm:

Image Title: “Here There Be Krafayis”
Based on a Doctor Who episode “Vincent and the Doctor” about Vincent van Gogh.

Cool:

Lastly, we were asked to capture an image that told a story. I found this one a challenge, because the shots I took didn’t come out like I had hoped. But, in my mind, the pictures I did capture had specific titles…

Image Title: “Oh Industry!”
From the movie Beaches; a song Bette Midler sings in one of her off-off-off Broadway shows.

Image Title: “Sunday in the Park with George”
Based on the show of the same name.

All-in-all, it was a great day, and I made a new friend. After the class was over, we spent the rest of the time walking through the cemetery snapping pictures and talking. By the time we left, it was almost pitch black out, and it was one of the best photography days I’d had all year!
